Why do I keep falling asleep during meditation, and does it mean meditation doesn't suit me?

answered

The short answer: falling asleep during sitting is common, has two well-documented explanations, and does not mean meditation “doesn’t suit” you — but it does mean something should be adjusted.

The tradition’s answer: drowsiness is not stillness

The classical manuals treat this question explicitly. Drowsiness (昏沉) is an error state, and mistaking it for entering stillness (入静) is a named beginner’s mistake. The distinction is experiential: true stillness is lucid and light (心神明晰,身心轻爽); drowsiness is dull and heavy. Three causes are standard in the manuals:

The remedies follow directly: eat lightly, hold the posture, rest before sitting. The tradition’s counsel is non-moralizing: drowsiness is a condition to correct, not a personal failing.

The modern community’s answer: the body takes its due

Contemporary Chinese psychology platforms answer the same question in physiological terms: guided relaxation is sleep-inducing by design, and a tired body, once given stillness, takes the opportunity to rest. The community consensus: sleep-onset during meditation is information about accumulated fatigue — often a sign of sleep debt rather than a failure of practice.

What neither answer covers

Neither the traditional nor the community answer addresses pathological sleepiness (e.g., persistent daytime sleep-onset with adequate rest), which is a medical question, not a meditation question. If you sleep enough and still cannot stay awake when sitting, that deserves professional evaluation.

The synthesis this site offers

The two answers converge: treat sleep during sitting as a signal, fix the conditions (light meal, upright posture, rest before practice), and never force wakefulness by fighting the body. See EXP-001 and the drowsiness pattern for the documented reports behind this answer.

Not medical advice: this page is informational. Persistent or distressing sleepiness warrants a doctor, not a meditation manual.
