Jiandu (见独)
Jiandu 见独, the 'seeing of the alone' — the summit stage of the Nü Yu ladder: after the dawn-clearing, the practitioner sees the solitary, and only then does time fall away.
The term
见独 (jiàndú) — 见, to see; 独, alone, solitary, the only one. In the Nü Yu ladder, the term names the stage after the dawn-clearing:
“…dawn-clearing, then the seeing of the alone. Seeing the alone, then no past or present.” (朝彻而后能见独;见独而后能无古今。)
Why the term matters
- 独 is the Dao’s own adjective. The word 独 belongs to the Way before it belongs to this ladder: DDJ ch. 25 describes the Way as 独立而不改 — “standing alone and unchanging.” The ladder’s 见独 is the seeing of that: not a private vision but the perception of what is solitary because it is the only one of its kind. The site cross-links the two pages to keep the family visible: the dao glossary is the term’s home.
- It is a seeing, not a becoming. The ladder’s grammar is precise: the three exclusions (外天下/外物/外生) are doings, the dawn-clearing is a clearing, and 见独 is an act of perception — the first positive faculty exercised since the ladder began. The traditional readings preserved in the teaching editions gloss it as seeing the absolute body of the Way (见道之真体). The site keeps the term’s perceptual cast because it decides what kind of claim the tradition is making: the summit of practice is described as recognition, not possession.
- Its consequence is the loss of time. The ladder continues: 见独而后能无古今 — after the seeing, no past or present. The alone is what remains when before/after falls away, which is why the next rungs are 不死不生 (neither dying nor born) and 撄宁 — the stillness that still lives amid disturbance. The seeing is not the end of the ladder; it is the point at which the ladder’s two halves — subtraction and culmination — meet.
Usage notes
The term stays in pinyin with the gloss “seeing the alone”; it is the zhaoche term’s pair (朝彻 → 见独: clearing → seeing), and the two glossary pages are written to be read together as the ladder’s turning point.
