Zhang Boduan (张伯端)
Zhang Boduan 张伯端 (984–1082) — the poet of inner alchemy: author of the Wuzhen pian, the verse classic that gave Daoist self-cultivation its body-first doctrine (nature and life, both cultivated, life first), and the founder of the Southern lineage's line of transmission.
The man
- The clerk who burned the files. The record is agreed on the frame: a Northern Song official-scholar (jinshi degree, prefectural clerk, exiled for the offense the tradition calls 火烧文书 — burning his office’s documents in a moment of renunciation) who turned, in mid-life, to the Way he had studied all along. His own preface (quoted verbatim in the verification) lists the studies — three teachings’ scriptures, law, mathematics, medicine, divination, formations, astronomy, geography, the arts of death and life — 靡不留心详究: nothing he did not study with care. The catalog of a Confucian polymath, in service of an alchemist.
- 1069, Chengdu. The tradition’s hinge-year: serving under the official Lu Shen, he was in Chengdu in the jiyou year and — in his own preface’s account — his sincerity drew a “perfected person” who transmitted 金丹药物火候之诀, the golden-elixir method of drug and fire-timing. The later tradition identifies the transmitter as Liu Haichan; the site registers the identification as the tradition’s own, and the transmission as his own claim: what is historically his is the text the transmission produced.
- The Wuzhen pian: alchemy as verse. Completed in 1075, the book states the whole method in poetry — 16 regulated verses, 64 quatrains, 12 Xijiangyue lyrics, and more — and states its doctrine in four words that became the Southern lineage’s charter: 性命双修,先命后性 — nature (性) and life (命) both cultivated, life first. The body is the furnace (以身为鼎炉), essence and qi the drug, spirit the fire — the three-treasures vocabulary the site already holds, organized into a program. Its famous sibling is the Zhouyi cantong qi; its closing sections absorb Chan — the three-teachings confluence the site has tracked from Lu Xiujing through Zhiyi.
- Three transmissions, three disasters — and the book’s honest sequel. The postface records 三传非人,三遭祸患: three transmissions to the wrong men, three disasters. The Hongdao study (registered in verification) sorts the chronology the tradition itself muddied: the pre-book three (his active search in Qin-Long) and the post-book three (students who came and whom he could not bear to refuse) are different episodes — the book itself is the divider. The site holds this as the alchemical tradition’s own teaching-ethics document: transmission is the danger point, not the method.
- The lineage he did not found. He transmitted to Shi Tai; the line runs Shi Tai → Xue Daoguang → Chen Nan → Bai Yuchan, who built the actual Southern school (南宗) — Zhang Boduan is its 初祖 (first ancestor) by title, not by organization: in his lifetime he was a poet-teacher with three bad students. The Yuan enfeoffed him 紫阳真人; the Qing Yongzheng emperor, centuries later, made him Daci Yuantong Chanxian Ziyang zhenren and ordered a temple built at his old Tiantai site — the tradition’s own demonstration that canonization is posthumous construction, registered as such.
Why he belongs in this knowledge base
Because he is the site’s clearest body-first counterweight. The Zuowang, Shouyi, and Neiguan lineages the site has documented run through the mind to the body; Zhang Boduan’s charter — 先命后性 — runs through the body to the mind, with the body as furnace, drug, and fire. The site’s experience archive documents contemporary teachers who say the same thing in Buddhist language (the body is the key; the mind-methods come after) — the phrasing converges; the lineages do not, and the site keeps them apart. He is also the tradition’s own proof that its deepest technical literature can be beautiful: the Wuzhen pian is the site’s answer to readers who assume alchemical writing must be opaque — the tradition’s most systematic text is also its most composed.

- The Shaoyang Yuqing Gong biography, quoting the Wuzhen pian preface verbatim (I was drawn to the Way in youth and ranged through the three teachings' scriptures, and the arts of law, mathematics, medicine, divination, formations, astronomy, geography, and death-and-life — nothing I did not study with care) and the Luyanfu ji (the Lu Yanfu record) on his exile and service under Lu Shen, with the shihuo-wenshu and death-verse traditions: he died in 1082 having left the Jiesong ('the four elements are about to disperse, the floating clouds already empty, the one numen has its subtle being, the dharma realm all pervades')
- An academic study of key problems in Zhang Boduan biography (Zheng Weiyi, Hongdao 58, 2014): the Wuzhen pian prefaces are the authoritative basis; the 'three transmissions to the wrong men' before the book and the 'three' after its completion are not a repeated narrative but two distinct episodes, divided by the book itself — the first an active search in Qin-Long, the second the reluctant acceptance of students who came to him

- The Zhejiang CPPCC cultural-history entry: the Wuzhen pian was completed in 1075 (Xining 8); the Yongzheng emperor (Qing) enfeoffed him Daci Yuantong Chanxian Ziyang zhenren and ordered the Tongbai chongdao guan built at his old practice site on Tiantai
