The Hook-Forger's One Thing

The Grand Marshal's hook-forger is eighty and has never missed by a hair. Asked whether it is skill or the Way, he answers: 'I have a keeping (有守).' Since twenty he has loved forging hooks; for other things he has no eyes, and only the hook gets his attention. What he uses, he borrows from what he does not use.

The story

The hook-forger of the Grand Marshal of Chu (大马之捶钩者) was eighty years old and had never missed by a hair’s breadth (不失豪芒). The Marshal asked: “Is it skill — or do you have a Way?” (子巧与?有道与?) The old man said: “I have a keeping (臣有守也). Since I was twenty I have loved forging hooks; for other things I give no eyes, and only the hook gets my attention (于物无视也,非钩无察也). What is used, borrows from what is not used, and so keeps its use through length of years (是用之者,假不用者也以长得其用) — how much more so one who has nothing at all that he uses? Of what thing would he not have the use?” (而况乎无不用者乎!物孰不资焉!)

Framing: the kept attention
