Cheng Yi and Yang Shi: Standing in Snow (1093 CE)
The 'Cheng Men Li Xue' episode — Yang Shi standing respectfully in the snow rather than disturb Cheng Yi's sitting — becomes the iconic image of Neo-Confucian jingzuo.
Event: Per the Song shi biography of Yang Shi (1053–1135), the future Neo-Confucian master and his fellow student You Zuo came to see Cheng Yi (1033–1107) when he was sitting quietly; Cheng Yi sat in stillness, so the two stood waiting beside him. When Cheng Yi rose, the snow outside was already a foot deep. The episode — “standing in the snow at Cheng’s gate” (程門立雪) — became the canonical image of reverence for quiet sitting and teacher-deference in the Neo-Confucian tradition.
Evidence class: later dynastic biography (Song shi, 14th c.) recording a 12th-century tradition; widely accepted as the founding anecdote of Neo-Confucian jingzuo culture, though its details are traditional.
Why it matters here: it marks jingzuo’s entry into the Confucian mainstream — quiet sitting as a practice of moral cultivation and respect, parallel to but distinct from the Daoist zuowang lineage. See the jingzuo page.
