EXP-024: Standing Post, Sitting Lotus — the Habit Seeds That Surface and the Legs That Alternate
Why this record matters
This is the archive’s record of the series’ posture-pairing episode — the one where standing post and sitting are weighed against each other, and where the teacher’s own leg-rotation rule (already held on the halflotus page) gets its daily-schedule form: demon-subduing one day, lotus the next. It is kept for three things: the standing-post question (quieter than sitting, stronger qi — one practitioner’s experience, recorded without endorsement, and a reminder that the posture question the site answers is about sitting postures, while standing practice is its own tradition with its own claims); the surfacing doctrine (the habit seeds pour out — if they don’t pour out, how would they be destroyed — the series’ clearest statement of the emotional-surfacing pattern the site holds from its own records); and the episode’s closing line — worrying about the future is superfluous, fix the present — which the site keeps as the series’ convergence with plain prudence, the same convergence marked in the breathing episode and the restless-body episode.
The record (paraphrased, anonymized)
- The reports: standing post brings stronger qi sensations and a calmer mind than sitting, and the reporter asks about combining them; six weeks into a 400,000-recitation Vajrasattva group retreat, anger and irritation have risen; abdominal breathing now arises in sitting but not in daily life, with a stabbing pain left of the navel during breath practice; and a long progress report — warm currents from both sides of the waist (right clear, left blocked at the scapula), sits ending in a sense of bodily expansion rather than pain, dantian fullness, one eye appearing larger with clearer vision (the reporter has astigmatism and asks whether this is punishment for having practiced only the lotus), lotus at 35 minutes and demon-subduing risen from zero to 25-35 minutes after adopting breath practice, and children disrupting prostrations even at four in the morning.
- The answers, in their own terms: eat less, move more; standing breathing practice is good, continue; the habit seeds pouring out is normal — if they don’t pour out, how would they be destroyed; keep reciting while wandering thoughts continue, nothing to adjust; the abdominal pain is fascia not yet loosened — movement and massage; the reactions are all good reactions — alternate legs daily, demon-subduing one day and lotus the next, and don’t think about distant things; evening prostrations and morning standing post are fine; and the close: worrying about the future is superfluous, fix the present.
- The three layers, kept apart: the reports; the teacher’s framework (surfacing-as-progress, the fascia explanation, the karma frame implied by the questioner’s 业障 language, the leg-rotation rule); and the alternative reading — the standing-post comparison recorded as one person’s experience, the surfacing doctrine cross-linked to the site’s emotional-surfacing record, the fascia theory labeled lay-physiology, the eye report registered with the teacher’s non-confirmation, and the moderate corners kept as ordinary prudence.
Confidence note: one public Q&A episode, paraphrased and anonymized per the ingestion rules — medium confidence; the teacher’s identity and lineage are not named on this site; the surfacing doctrine and the fascia theory are the teacher’s traditional framework, cross-linked to EXP-004, EXP-014, EXP-018, and EXP-023.
Interpretations
Practitioner: The standing reporter reads the stronger qi and quieter mind as standing post being somehow better, and proposes half-time standing post; the mantra reporter worries the rising anger is karmic backlash or personal failure; the progress reporter wonders whether the eye asymmetry is a punishment for having practiced only one leg posture, and whether to abandon the lotus entirely for a period of demon-subduing-only practice
Traditional: The teacher's answers, in his own terms: eat less and move more; standing breathing practice is good, continue; the habit seeds pouring out is normal — if they do not pour out, how would they be destroyed; there is nothing to adjust — keep reciting while wandering thoughts continue; the abdominal pain is fascia not yet loosened, addressed by movement and massage; the reactions are all good reactions; alternate legs daily — demon-subduing one day, lotus the next — and do not think about distant things; evening prostrations and morning standing post are fine; and the episode's closing line: worrying about the future is superfluous, fix the present
