Returning Is the Motion of the Way (Daodejing 40)
Annotated translation of ch. 40 — the book's shortest chapter and its own hinge: returning is the Way's motion, the soft is the Way's use, and the generation formula — all things born from being, being born from nothing.

Term-by-term notes
- The book’s shortest chapter, at the book’s center. Two sentences, twenty-one characters — and the tradition places it at the hinge between the Dao and De halves of the received book. The site notes the placement without pressing it: whatever the chapter-division’s history, this chapter states the engine that runs every inversion the book has made — the ch. 36 reversals (gather/spread, weaken/strengthen) are this chapter’s sentence applied to politics; the ch. 22 turns are it applied to conduct; the ch. 11 emptiness is its generation-formula applied to artifacts.
- 反 — the word with two senses. The academic record (registered in verification, citing Qian Zhongshu) holds the two readings: 反 as reversal (the opposite direction) and 反 as return (coming back). The book’s own ch. 25 chain — 大曰逝,逝曰远,远曰反 (great, then flowing away; flowing away, then far; far, then returning) — the site’s ch. 25 page — supplies the gloss: the word means both at once, the motion that reaches the limit and turns back. The book’s extremes are points of departure for their opposites — the chapter is the book’s statement of that law, and the site holds it beside the reversal chapter as law-and-case.
- 弱 — the soft as the Way’s working. 弱者道之用: the chapter’s second half-line names the use of the Way as the weak, the yielding. The word is the book’s standing vocabulary — the ch. 36 柔弱胜刚强, the infant-and-stiff-corpse of ch. 76 — and here it is promoted to definition: not “the Way is weak” but “the Way works as the weak.” The site’s non-action pages hold the practice consequence: the soft is the only mode that returns, because the hard has nowhere to go but break.
- The generation formula. 天下万物生于有,有生于无 — things from being, being from nothing: the chapter’s cosmology in one line, and the book’s own summary of the ch. 2 pair and the ch. 11 artifact argument. The site registers the formula’s standing place in the later tradition — the inner-alchemical reading took 无 as the pre-cosmic root of the inner work — and holds the text-level claim modest: the chapter states a direction of dependence (being leans on nothing), not a mechanism.
- The note on the word’s later life. 反者道之动 entered the tradition’s proverb stock as 物极必反 (things at their extreme reverse) — the popularized form the chapter itself never uses, and which trims the word to its reversal sense only. The site keeps both senses in the translation (“returning,” glossed) per its term discipline: the law the chapter states is that every extreme is a turning — reversal is the return.
